Lottie debated, for a moment, telling her, saying it for the first time to anyone except the people in group therapy. But she imagined Natalie’s face, closing off, eyes widening, muscles tightening that tiny bit, shifting just that tiny bit away from her. And she felt the warmth of Nat’s arm pressed against her, felt the tiniest shiver as Natalie shifted and her blond hair brushed against the side of Lottie’s neck, and the thought of losing that contact, even just for a moment, stopped the words from leaving her mouth.
