He decided on the perfect game that they could play to get to know each other better. He wants to know everything there is to know about Ilya. Things he's never told anyone else. Shane is starving for pieces of Ilya, but he plays the nonchalant role he's spent many years mastering.
“Yeah. Do you know the game Never Have I Ever?”
Ilya lets out a groan. “Yes. Is stupid game. Whoever has most boring life wins. Congratulations!” He uses his free hand to pat the back of Shane's. “You probably win every time.”
“Fuck off.” Shane pouts. “I bet I've done a lot of things you haven't.”
“Mm, yes. True. Never have I ever come second in draft pick.”
"Asshole.” Shane pretends to retract his hand away but Ilya pulls it back to him. “It was just an idea, we don't have to play.”
Ilya squeezes his hand. “No. I wanna play.”

Ilya can’t be so separate from it all anymore, can’t get by on hotel room visits and brief phone calls when they’re in different time zones. It isn’t enough. Not anymore. Not when every iteration of the future they could have waiting for them one day had collapsed in on itself when Shane hit the ice.
