Emma almost has everything. She's got a wonderful son, a beautiful, tender friend and co-parent, and a family she can count on. It was all she ever dreamed of, once upon a time. At times, she thinks she finally understands what authors mean when they end their story with: they lived happily ever after.

Summary
Carol knows that Zosia’s smiling that eerie smile they can’t get rid of; the reflex-pleasure at taking care of her and working to construct her happiness. Carol hates it less now, can tolerate quite a bit of it, even ask for help on special occasions. It’s a compromise, both their natures must bend for it to work.
___It’s the week of the anniversary of Helen’s death. Carol and Zosia have been companions for over a decade. Carol hasn’t been successful in reversing the merge, and neither has the hivemind in assimilating Carol.
