Summary
In most cases, Odysseus feared the truth, especially when it wasn't connected with Penelope. Avoiding the truth had been his habit for a long time, and only his wife could ground him, she kept him in reality. When he went to Troy, he left his heart with her so as not to lose this connection, and it became the only part of him that had been preserved for twenty years.

This is the direct aftermath of returning home after two decades of trauma and pain.
