Skye did not respond at all. Not verbally, nor with any emotion. Electing to stare at the illusion with infuriating neutrality. The Smiler realized with regret that whatever response the brain would have allowed was quickly cut off. The demon had acted too quickly and eagerly.
Or: In a last ditch effort to protect itself, Skye’s brain disassociates in an effort to deprive its parasite of nutrients (aka trauma). Now the Smiler must figure out how to get Skye to stop disassociating, which involves a lot more words of affirmation and a lot less dismemberment than it would normally prefer.

Her true name, he reiterated to himself, and despite his lingering shock at her deceit, Mr. 9 found himself unable to quell the hot flash of satisfaction in his gut at the reminder that her identity - a frontier agent’s most closely guarded secret - was no longer a mystery to him. “Princess of Alabasta,” he tacked on her title with a low whistle, ignoring the sharp stinging of his split lip. “Who would have thought?”
Vivi’s lips parted on a half-hearted laugh. “No one, we’d hoped.” Her gaze flickered to his, and Mr. 9 was gladdened to see a hint of amusement among the depths of her grief. “That was rather the point, Mr. 9.”

The last thing Mr. 9 didn't want to see was Miss Valentine’s heel over his face. He didn’t want to think how messy it would be, to see his blood on her heel. Unless she took out his eyes first, which is another terrifying image. So, he closed his eyes, and waited.
But nothing came. Instead, he heard her laugh. “On second thought, I have a better idea.”
(In which Miss Valentine makes a minor change of plans for Mr. 9's fate. Not that it doesn't change things in the grand scheme of things. Still, sometimes the unexpected leads to a better ending than it could be.)

Sanji brings his free hand up to his face, and he, too, seems shocked at his own reaction. He laughs awkwardly. “No, yeah, my bad. That just reminds me of someone I know.”

Mr. Nine covered his mouth with his hand to hide his own smile just before she turned to look at him, exasperated. He didn’t know about the rest of them, but he was laughing because he’d already accepted that they were all going to die. Anything that happened between now and then was just a pleasant surprise.
