The chill wraps around Cregan’s shoulders. It sits atop his skin, unable to cool the blood that runs hotter. He lingers over the green button, his thumb hesitating. He takes another glance at the door, breathing deeper, then he accepts the call. The buzzing ceases, there is only silence.
“Hey.”
Cregan waits, with every nerve alight, for the voice to come through the line.
“Hi.”
And it does. Sweet. Harmless. Sickening.
