Summary
Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is.
On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone.
Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.

The Raiders are in the playoffs, and something just isn’t clicking. “Well. I came out to the team as gay a few weeks ago. Apparently they decided they’d rather spend their time calling me a ‘geisha whore’ and standing around than doing their fucking jobs,” Shane said, dejectedly. He kept his voice low as they got into position for the game to start so the ref wouldn’t hear. His eyes trained on the ground, ready for the drop. He couldn’t force himself to look at Ilya in that moment.
“What.” Rozanov’s voice was low as he growled the word out.
Shane braved a glance upwards, hoping he wouldn’t see more disgust. While he did find it in Ilya’s eyes, it seemed to also be mixed with a twinge of sadness and pure, unadulterated anger. Ilya let out a harsh puff of breath.
Unsure of how Ilya felt about his confession, Shane went on, “Yeah it’s whatever man. Sorry, I shouldn’t have-“
“No. You don’t apologize. Motherfuckers.”
AU where Shane is slightly older than Ilya. Shane captains the metros while Ilya captains the centaurs. Shane tries to come out to his teammates and much to the horror of the centaurs, they do not take it well.

Summary
Being an unbonded omega in the NHL has never really been seen as a good thing. Some fans still have their biases about it, and even some team owners do too. Unless an omega is a fucking superstar of a player, the NHL does not care about them at all.
