Espresso and Madeleine lived under the thumb of a Republic swallowed by the swelling conflict of a civil war. The Coffee Mages and the Paladins, two rivalling Houses that threaten to swallow the entire White Lily Kingdom in war. Espresso and Madeleine had harboured a secret friendship, which evolved into a hidden romance.
Desperately fleeing their homes, they stow away aboard a ship named Adrestia, where Espresso and his companion are finally able to rest. Soon arriving in the Vanilla Kingdom, Espresso is plagued by dreams and visions that disturb his sleep. Dreams of Ancients, dreams of people he's never met. He and his companion wander into the wilds of the Vanilla Kingdom, trying to put distance between themselves and the society that has turned on them.
Something is stirring. Something great and terrible, a growing dark shadow over the world. What secrets does the Vanilla Kingdom hold? What is the meaning of Espresso's dreams? Will they ever be safe, or will the past haunt them until their dying days?

Summary
After the supposed death and disappearance of Dark Enchantress, the remaining four ancient heroes can't seem to decide on what to do if said witch were to return once more. The Republic, allied with the Vanilla Kingdom believes that should she return, there be a way to reverse the corruption done to her soul. Espresso, a professor in Parfaedia, has been selected by the Consul himself to research ways of reversing dark magic's effects on the soul. He is forced to give up his current teaching position and investigate his own magic capabilities and what can be done to undo hexes. He takes notice in a certain wielder of light magic, believing that his soul's opposite magic may be able to provide the answer. Madeleine however, is intrigued by Espresso, and does everything in his power to get the mage away from his studies to live life a little more every day.
A song I like will be assigned to every chapter to convey the type of emotion I was going for, so feel free to give a listen! (or not, idc)

He had been practicing his aim, as per usual, and while he typically missed his shot once in a millennium, he had missed his target for the third time that day. Wind Archer allowed the wind's current to sweep the discarded arrow back to him and fall into place alongside the other arrows in his well-loved quiver. Letting out a frustrated sigh, the guardian of the Dessert Forest realizes he had been rather distracted all day... Images of a mischievous smile and flaming locks swarmed his brain and created an unusually absent-minded cookie.
