Early mornings, when pink and orange filtered through the corners of their makeshift window curtains, the sunrise glinting off a bit of drool on the corner of Ava’s lip that made her ache; drops of sweat lining her temples after an afternoon training session; all of her smiles and all of her soft, second-nature touches that would send Beatrice to her knees, door locked behind her in their tiny, leaking bathroom, begging for reprieve or repentance…

Summary
Finally, in the distance Ava sees what JC was talking about.
The first one is tall with cheekbones that look like they could cut glass, her long hair done in a braid. The next woman is small, with a bright smile and curls on top of her head. The next is all muscle, tattoos, and braids sticking out of a cowboy hat.
Then standing slightly off to the side is Cowboy Hat 2 with just as many muscles as Cowboy Hat 1 but no tattoos, and she looks almost shy. The first three are waving as the bus rolls to a stop and Cowboy Hat 1 nudges Cowboy Hat 2 who sheepishly waves, and oh, Ava is struck with needing to know everything about that.

“So… you’re not mad?” The alcohol was already settling, warm in her stomach, and the words were out before she could stop them.
“Mad?” Ava asked. “Why would I be mad?”
“I’m…not entirely sure.” Beatrice had run through this conversation a thousand times in her head. Sometimes, the scenario ended with Ava telling her they couldn’t be friends anymore. Sometimes, it ended in a way that would make Beatrice blush to think about. Either way, she never pictured it being this casual.
“It’s cool.”
“It’s – it’s ‘cool?’”
Ava shrugged. “Yeah. I mean, I used to have a ridiculous crush on you too, so I guess we’re even, right?”
