Please, son-“ Jack begs as he grabs onto Dick’s outstretched hand. “Please just promise me you will at least let me keep you safe. Wilson won’t even interrupt your work. Dick embraces his father at the mention of Jack’s late father. As much as he usually attempts to disprove such notions, Dick can tell the care for the man Jack has. As he lets go, Dick nods solemnly.

Instead of billionaire philanthropist, Bruce Wayne, adopting the recently orphaned acrobat, Dick Grayson, another billionaire is there the night the Flying Grayson's fell.
But this billionaire’s night job poses a risk to his son. So, the reasonable thing to do is hire his local maybe-mercenary friend to protect him.

Dick, despite everyone’s assurances that he will do great, stresses over how good of a father he will be. He knows how much an emotionally closed off farther can change you from normal to a Bat.
Years prior, Bruce feels himself in a similar situation. He wishes the best for Dick, but it is hard for him to express as much, Dick not being his son and all.

An impostor is running around Gotham. A billowing figure tanking gunshots like they were confetti. He wears the bat-symbol like it's his own, but with spikes across his shoulders and back, making it clear he's not the friendly type. The cape, large and matte, splits by the end into tendrils, attaching themselves to the ceiling and walls like itty-bitty grappling hooks. No. Not like grappling hooks, Nightwing numbly noted. Like batclaws.
"That was not Batman," Nightwing reminisced with more ease than he felt. "There's a fairly," he raised his hand where the real Batman's height ended, "big difference."
Or
Absolute Batman lands in the Mainline universe and learns that maybe his mission doesn't need to be a lonely one.

Krypto was a good dog. He knew he was, Kal-El let him watch the television sometimes and Krypto saw what good dogs do. They greet their humans enthusiastically, share meals with their humans, sleep with their humans! And Krypto is enthusiastic about Kal-El, he jumps on him and licks him and tries to play with him! But, Kal-El didn't seem to like any of that, and seemed to not like Krypto. That was fine. If Kal-El didn’t want Krypto around, it was okay. Krypto loved Kal-El enough that he’d go away to make him happy, even if he didn’t want to.
Or: Krypto really misunderstands his owner's behavior and seeks out greener pastures. Now, no one had ever claimed Gotham of all places was "greener pastures," but Dick Grayson was the best little human a dog could possibly ask for, and Krypto wants to keep him.
