The conclusion John Marston had come to was that love and women weren’t worth it.
He’d never let himself be hurt by a woman, he’d declared. A bitter Arthur had only snorted and lifted his beer in agreement.
So, why, had he let himself get swept up in it all? Dutch’s clever plans always meant something different than they sounded like, and ninety-nine times out of a hundred, that something was trouble. But pride’s a valuable thing in a gang, and they all were looking at him, daring him to back down.

John stands up after him. “Just a broken nose,” He says with a frown on his face. “It'll heal.”
His big brother lightly smacks him on his head. “Just ‘cause it can heal don’t mean it's okay,” He says. “Don't go runnin’ and messin’ ‘round knowin’ damn well you're gonna get hurt. It's just a broken nose now, but one day it might be a damn bullet in yer head.”
John huffs as he stares at him.
“I ain't always gonna be here to save yer ass,” Arthur tells him. “You can't always depend on me.”

Summary
At some point, probably after graduation, they started dating, an unspoken decision after spending countless hours together. It only made sense. Steve held him when they were with their friends, arms always wrapped around his shoulders, his waist, a hand always on him. It made Eddie feel wanted. Needed. And it kept the bad thoughts at bay, for a while.
But the nightmares came back. Like they always do.

Summary
There’s silence again, save for the faint breeze and crickets chirping in the brush ahead of Eddie.
Something plastic hits the ground. Steve mumbles, “Fuck.”
Actually, scratch that. Eddie has no idea what the Hell is going on.
The sound of Steve’s cursing nearly snaps Eddie out of his dread; its vice-grip loosening ever so slightly as Eddie presses his palm against his mouth, suppressing a laugh. Steve’s just so fucking goofy that he’s fumbling through trying to end his own almost-relationship. It makes Eddie feel a bit delirious.
There’s some vague shuffling from Steve, before something fucking weird happens.
The first thing Eddie notices is the clack of a cassette falling into a slot. A twinkling piano begins to fade in, single notes wandering into full on chords. Then, Billy fucking Joel starts to sing.
(or: steve resolves a lover's quarrel in a completely reasonable and super suave manner.)
