"He ain't breathin', Darry!" Soda yelled. "Pony's not breathing!" The yell quickly turned into a painful, desperate cry.
Darry had to force himself to move. All he wanted to do was sit down and cry. But no, he couldn't do that. He was the adult here. His baby brother was on the floor. And Darry had to save him, or he was going to die.
Ponyboy's skin was gray, lips blue, body frighteningly limp.
Darry kneeled down on the floor next to Pony, immediately starting CPR.
Soda sat on his knees, weeping at the sight before him.
His baby brother wasn't breathing, he was drowning...or maybe he already had.
His big brother was doing CPR on him.
Soda was certain that this was the most painful thing he would ever see.

Life without Johnny and Dally is becoming too much for Ponyboy, more-so than he himself even knows. When he starts sleepwalking and nearly dies, his brothers become sick with worry. "I've never had a strawberry," she says quietly. "Daddy said he would try to get me some for my birthday. He said that they'd be covered in chocolate. But he's dead." Not for the first time, Haymitch wishes he were someone else. Someone who would know how to respond to what Katniss just said. Someone who, currently, wasn't trying to figure out if the nausea building up in his throat was from his new situation or the hangover that he'd ignored because of it. Someone like Burdock.
"I could get you strawberries and chocolate for your birthday," Haymitch says.
She tears her eyes away from the table, and once again, her cool grey eyes meet his. She nods slowly. In a whisper so low he has to strain his ears to hear her, she says "You're not my daddy."
His throat closes, and he thinks he feels tears sting his eyes. Haymitch runs a hand through his long hair and lets out a shaky breath. "I know. But I'm here," he responds.
OR
AU where Katniss is five when both her parents die, leaving her and Prim with no other choice but to live with Haymitch.

Summary
Haymitch felt sick, staring at the picture of him and his dove, her wide eyes and warm smile fixed on the younger version of him, the version of him that thought he had all the time in the world with her. He wanted to yell at his 16 year old self to turn around, to not look at the camera, to look at her while he still could. He was sick because the image of her that haunted his dreams, blood dripping from her mouth as he fed her gumdrops, had actually grown blurry around the edges. It wasn’t until he saw her face again just now that he realized it- he had begun to forget the details of her. His eyes stung with tears, and he dropped the photos on the carpet like they’d burned him, head snapping up to meet Katniss’ eyes.
