Summary
Koki Tanakabara has not aged well in the four years since his extremely public challenge to Kira during the Sakura Incident. However, an ouster from NHN, an attempt on his life which has driven him to a bunker in the distant mountains, and an understandably chronic fear of his own impending death have done nothing whatsoever to make him cease public opposition to Kira – and a direct challenge from Kira only inspires him to do it even louder.
Light Yagami is the unquestioned ruler of the world and regularly appears on television to make statements as Kira. Owing to the lack of personal conflict, the atrocities he left behind him, or the fact that the Death Note is an intrinsically corrupting force (but it's definitely all of the above), he is also fundamentally dead inside. As such, he decides that toying with a dissident podcaster might add a little spice to his life. He... certainly gets his wish.
Based on an ongoing Tumblr roleplay; will gecko up an ending if said roleplay should ever peter out. Updates weekly.

Those that stood by him often said that Koki Tanakabara had never changed; it was the world that had changed, as he stood immovable. Tanakabara could not, in honesty, say the same. There was no mandate to conform to the shifting of the times – that, he knew as well as anyone alive – but there was no helping being changed. When the ground shifted under a man's feet, like it or not, that man was obliged to alter his footing.

An exploration of how that awesome reporter from volume 3/episode 11 might have fared in the months and years to come. As a civilian, who has a few built-in presuppositions deriving from his profession in general and his experience at Sakura TV in particular, he comes to many wrong conclusions about the events as we know them. But as he is, in fact, Koki Tanakabara, this does not prevent him from continuing to be completely awesome.

PSA (17/06/2021): I'm very sorry to anyone who was still hoping for an update on this story, but I have to officially announce that "Ghosts" is abandoned. As YellowShapedBox never replied back to confirm what they wanted done with this fic, I'll be leaving it up, but removing it from the Dragon's Light continuity. Someday I may come back to rewrite it on my own, but it won't be for a long while since I've mostly been out of active TES fandom for a year or so now, and have other fanfic projects in my current fandom ongoing.
