Summary
Realistically, Joe should have expected him to leave at some point. Nicky had always known he’d need to grow more than this town could afford him, while Joe had always been and always will be a homebody happy in a cozy circle of friends and familiar street corners and the only apartment he’s ever owned. Compatible in every which way, the two of them, except in the paths they needed to take. Heartbreaking, really. Fit for a bittersweet movie plot.
All that to say: Joe still misses him.

Summary
Nicolo Genova, or Nicky to his American friends, is just trying to get through his PhD program. He's writing his dissertation on Post-classical homoerotic poetry, but he cannot find anyone who speaks an extinct dialect of Arabic so he can translate a famed love poem by a little known poet, al-Kaysani.
Strangely enough, his friend knows a professor on campus who can translate the poem. Back in college Joe and his friends used to joke about selling out, finding rich patrons and being paid obscene amounts of money to paint pretentious abstract pieces. Ten years later, Joe's the only one who actually did it. Finding himself with more money than he'll ever need, an utter lack of passion for his craft and no friends left in the city, he runs away to a tiny town on the coast to try and rediscover whatever it is he lost of himself along the way. Luckily for him, the overly friendly manager of the motel he's living in and said overly friendly manager's two year old son are all too eager to help him out.

Summary
The thing nobody ever tells you about summoning a demon is that it just might work. Or, perhaps they do, in fact, push that point rather hard. Maybe the issue is that Nicky never listened.
Or: Nicky enters into a strange exchange of gifts and favours with a demon in an attempt to ensure that he isn't indebted to an evil being he summoned entirely by accident. If he can help it the demon won't ever have a plausible claim to his soul. Joe, however, turns out to be anything but what Nicky expected. As the two grow closer and secrets come to light, Nicky quickly realises that it's his heart, rather than his soul, that's on the line here.
