She looks at him, then down at the mezzo piano. She clenches her left hand into a fist, feels the short edges of her nails dig into her palm—and Zoya wonders if she was in the storm right now, if the steel stains would run under the water like a trail of pearlescent silver ink.
“Sure,” she agrees slowly. She takes a pen, and traces over his mezzo piano. It’s acceptance. “Walk me through what you’ve done here?”
And he grins one of his Nikolai grins, then moves over slightly so he’s right by her side. He points at his first notation and starts to explain. “I kinda see what you were going for here, with the imagery, but if you change this…”
And they drift off into the night, two souls at the head of a ship on the open sea. They sail until they can see the stars.
