Summary
Cliopher saw it the moment he stepped into the clearing.
His Radiancy had not described the creature that stole his memories at any point to Cliopher. Still, Cliopher looked at the winged creature before him, its head slowly tilting from side to side, forked tongue flickering through its lips as if to taste the air, and he knew.
The creature hissed, “What is it that you want?”
It was a little irritating that everybody had been right to insist that Cliopher go nowhere alone while they’d still been hunting for his Radiancy’s memories.

Summary
Kip Mdang returns to Solaara, hardly confident that the Imperial Service will take him back but sure that there is no place for him in the Vangavaye-ve.
The City of Cities is still expanding from the backwater village it was before the Fall; the work of reconstruction continues but it is no longer a simple crisis. In the Palace the big political beasts are circling for position under the newly awakened Emperor.
Despondent and determined to bury himself in work, Cliopher finds his former patron disapproving and the new Master of Offices openly hostile. But he is still a fifth degree secretary, and some problems are easier to solve when you feel that you have little left to lose... and don't care which enemies you make along the way.

Kip curled at the edge of the great bed of the Emperor of Astandalas and wondered why his stomach still lurched as though he were falling.
It was nothing physical. The surface of the bed was secure beneath him, the coverlet warm, the pillows astonishingly comfortable.
He had not known what to expect when he asked the Emperor to continue this pretence of taking him as a concubine. All he knew was that there was a danger to himself, his home, and his family if the nobility of the Empire saw him rejected by the Sun-on-Earth. And so Kip had asked, and the Emperor had agreed.

Conju finished his steady pacing along the final side of the great Bath. He emptied his basket, slung it comfortably over his arm, and strolled back to where his closest confidante and dearest friend was standing just inside the door, looking mesmerised.
“Your first sight of the bath, eh?”
Cliopher Sayo Mdang visibly collected himself. Conju noted his distraction, noted the wideness of his eyes and the tension in his stance, and felt the first tiny intimation of worry.
