Lan Zhan can feel the warmth of her skin against where her shirt has ridden up a little. She should have tucked it in better. Wei Ying rests her head on her shoulder and keeps up a running commentary on the woodlands, the rumbling in her stomach, the closed tube line that had stopped her from arriving at Lan Zhan’s on time, the awful show she had seen last week. Lan Zhan indulges in a little smile. There are only squirrels and moss to see them here.
They emerge from the treeline, and Wei Ying shrieks and throws herself from Lan Zhan’s back, sprinting down across the beach with her hands in the air. “Holy shit! Holy shit, Lan Zhan, this is where we’re camping?”
