“Ugh, you’re disgusting.”
Vi grins sharply, a dangerous glint in her eyes as she absentmindedly taps away at a rhythm on the shared kitchen’s dining table, her enjoyment of Caitlyn’s frustration as clear as day.
Caitlyn thinks she needs more sleep, or someone to shake her, because she unfortunately thinks this back and forth is… doing it for her. So she ignores the way her cheeks flush, her stomach tight and her jaw tense, as she grabs her leftovers and leaves the kitchen.
(She has unfortunately already indeed thought about banging this drummer.)

Vi lets a giggle burst out of her as she comes to a realization.
“Are you sure she wasn’t propositioning you, Cupcake?”
She feels Caitlyn freeze against her, silence dragging on for a beat. As if this is the first time she even considered it. “I mean - surely not… we exchanged words for a mere ten minutes, Vi. There’s no feasible way she - I would’ve noticed - “
Vi’s laughter echoes through the room.
“Oh, shut up. Don’t tease me,” Caitlyn huffs, letting her head drop to rest between Vi’s shoulder blades. Vi maneuvers around in Caitlyn’s arms to face her, bringing her chin up to meet her in a soft, slow kiss.
“Well, proposition or not, I’m gonna have to fucking thank her. Maybe send a fruit basket, or something. That’s the kind of shit they do, right?”
That look climbs back into Caitlyn’s eye. Dark. Mischievous. Predatory. “Does that mean… you would be interested? In using it?”
Vi swallows.
“Yeah, Cait. I’m very, very fucking interested.”

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Caitlyn said as they walked. “That the worst is over, that we’re standing on the other side.”
A flock of starlings swept free of the cliffs, and they paused to watch them go. Caitlyn adjusted the shawl again, the same wind that kicked the surface of the water into peaks blowing the hair back from her face. Vi’s breath lodged against her ribs, like a hand over her heart.
“Maybe there is no other side,” Vi said. “Maybe it’s all one thing.”

“Don't laugh,” Caitlyn says with a scoff, though Vi notices the corner of her mouth tilt up. “It’s the only real explanation. How else did I end up in the Hermes cabin for four years?”
“Well, yeah, but Cait—you’re like, easily the prettiest person at camp.”
Vi doesn’t even realize she’s said it until the words have slipped from her mouth, entirely truthful. She tries to keep herself from turning red, but thankfully Caitlyn isn’t looking at her anyway, instead staring down at her hands.

Summary
But it’s in those afternoons when Vi breathlessly helps haul Caitlyn up onto a rooftop, their sweaty palms against each other’s as Caitlyn grips her friend’s hand, does Caitlyn really feel like she gets to see the world for what it is. She stands on the rooftop next to Vi, panting, looking out into the numerous little squat buildings peppering this tiny coastal town, the great behemoth of the ocean waving just beyond all the way into the horizon, and she realizes that Piltover’s stuffy boardrooms and polished corners aren’t all that the world should be, as her peers believe.
The world is so much more. It can be so much more.

Caitlyn waits, watches the light furrow of Vi’s brow, takes in the way Vi’s fingers squeeze the plush gently at first, tentatively, then with a tad more force, takes in the way Vi’s eyes widen in surprise at the give and the texture.
She’ll keep this one. But maybe…
“You can have him,” she says.
Vi almost drops Theodore the Turtle.
“Nah,” Vi’s voice drags out, a little wobbly, a little faux light, the kind of tone she does before she’s about to make a joke to obfuscate some actual feelings. “These are for kids, yeah?”

"More what?" Vi asks, still patiently, indulgently still under her touch.
"Freckles," Caitlyn says, and shifts her grip to the nape of Vi's neck, urging her down so Caitlyn can kiss her face, dragging her lips softly, reverently over the new constellations of them blooming across Vi's face. They're faint, light brown, a beautifully chaotic spread stretching across her cheeks, over the slightly crooked bridge of her nose, curling up under her eyes.
