It’s probably not his first choice, in terms of how he’d imagined this finally happening.
Not that he’d imagined this exact scenario, per se, only maybe he had in that he’d always imagined he and Rose as more. More than companions, more than partners in crime, more than friends.
He’d imagined the kind of more that led to things like fighting for blanket space and casual kisses and, yes, sharing a bath. That right there was an action that was firmly planted on the “couples” side of the relationship divider, something that would define them as properly together and not leave them stuck in the weird sort of limbo they’d somehow fallen into.

“That sounds right up your alley.” Gilbert teases with a hint of a grin, but she can see the way he blinks, long and slow, like sleep might be getting to them both. “I would miss you, though.” He says, and for a moment, Anne is sure she’s heard him wrong.
She watches his face, but he shows no signs of making a joke or any sort of follow-up. “Well,” Anne says a bit uselessly, “I guess you’ll just have to write to me then.”
Gilbert smiles small. “I guess so.”

Something was changing. It was subtle, like the seasons or the tides, ebbing and changing so gradually that it was hard to tell that anything had changed at all until you were completely surrounded by it. There were signs though, that indicated that something was happening. Like the first warm breeze of spring after days of unending cold, there were moments that Anne could simply not deny that something was happening between her and Gilbert, that the ice was melting around their simple friendship and blossoming into something more.

He still remembered his words. It was late afternoon, and he was able to sit and hold a conversation more than the previous days. He was treasuring the moment, doing his best to remember everything, trying to learn as much as he could from this man that was just slipping away from him. Too soon. He had been telling him about Anne, because he asked, telling him how he knew she was his girl. It was incredible how an impending death stripped you of embarrassment and self-consciousness. He listened carefully. After a few minutes of peaceful silence, he finally spoke.
"You might think a teenage romance is what you want, son. Because you're a teenager now and you just want instant gratification. But if your heart is anything like mine, you already have the answers for your life. Don't ruin it by going too fast. Cultivate the next few years so that when your reap, you both are grown, mature and steady. So you go into this adventure with full conscience. Wait until she's sixteen, at least, give her space to grow and become her own and not an appendix to you".
So he was giving her space, even when he knew Anne was never going to be an appendix for anyone and hadn't intended to come back for a few years at least.
