Before that can go too far though, Steve reaches out and squeezes her hand, “I have custody of you.” He whispers, “And I’m going to fight to keep it.”
Max has no remaining family so Steve adopts her. This is a fic about healing and growing and the future and giving a happy ending to characters I fear won't get one.

It doesn't matter that she's too chicken to tell anybody they're together. It's fine. It's great. She's just worried about Will.
