Summary
If Mel King was anything, she was prepared. Especially working somewhere as unpredictable as The Pit, she needed to be ready in case of any hygiene-related emergency that could occur. She didn’t have enough fingers to count the number of times she had gotten a patient’s bodily fluids on her. It only made sense for her to carry an oversized cosmetic bag filled with essentials at all times.
As her hand finally made contact with the pouch, she grabbed it quickly and made her way to the bathroom. She placed the bag on the counter and unzipped it, watching the sides bag out due to how full it was. She rummaged through the bag in search of her toothbrush and toothpaste, when in her haste she accidentally grabbed a tampon. She stared at it for a moment, a look of deep thought coming over her face.
Oh. Oh.
___Or: Mel finds out she's pregnant and confides in Dana. This is how everyone finds out.

Summary
Mel understood how conception occurred. She understood how to prevent it, though the knowledge had never been personally relevant before. She knew it was unwise to have unprotected sex with someone if you didn’t know both partners were negative for STIs and if you weren’t willing to risk pregnancy.
But nothing had been wise about fucking Dr. Langdon in the bathroom of the ED.
It was only a few weeks later when Mel realized her period was six days late. It didn’t take a genius or special medical training to make a likely diagnosis.

Summary
It had seemed like the ED was able to operate well without him though, happy to have him back yet never missing a beat while he was gone. Was it selfish of him to wish that he was needed more?
And then there was Melissa King. Frank had never expected a welcome party, or any sort of celebration. But when Mel had first laid eyes on him, he could almost feel that sense of joy. She had welcomed him back with open arms, running to him like she was about to hug him, but thinking twice and settling to grab his biceps instead. Her hands were cold, but soft and gentle he recalls.

Summary
“Meet who?” Great, just the person Mel didn’t want to hear this.
“Mel’s new boyfriend.”
“He’s not my boyfriend.” Mel sighed, seriously trying to return to her charting as Frank now stood over her, the corners of his mouth turned down.

Summary
“Cute, but uh,” Frank chuckled at her act of sudden modesty, slightly mocked her even, “married—” he waved his left hand in the air “—you're obviously going through a lot right now, and plus, it wouldn’t be fair.”
Mel itched to say it was unfair now, with his dumb, tousled hair she wanted to tug, that cruel way he occupied her thoughts, and the fact that she couldn't kiss him without seeing his father’s face. None of it was fair to her. She never had the urge to balance the scales before—her life thus far had been tragedies and exits; she let them all go—until now.
So Mel said the thing she wasn't supposed to say.
“Not too sure if I like my boyfriend how I’m supposed to, or how I like you.”
Mel accidentally falls for her boyfriend's father.
