Feng Xin’s gaze wandered to a moth tapping itself against a lantern on his left, the dim light glowing inside the house, and turned back to the woman. “Why wait so long to call for help?”
She sighed, pensive. “This village is small, remote. We didn’t even have a temple. We knew no gods—only when the people we’d lost grew too large to bear did we go to the neighbouring village and pray.”
The woman sat upright, staring intensely at Feng Xin. “I have lost so many people dear to me to this monster, whatever it is. Though you’re a young god, I trust that you’ll be able to free my village of this burden, General Ju Yang.”

Feng Xin curses as a branch heavy with red blooms whacks him in the face, and the impact makes him sneeze. The hand on the grip of his bow tightens as a shrill giggle erupts in his peripherals, and his eyes squint, taking in the details of the swaying leaves. He walks faster.
Although he tries to stay alert, Feng Xin’s senses feel strangely muddled, like they’ve been stuffed with cotton. He rubs his nose and eyes, finding them sticky with pollen, eyes widening.
“The fuck… flowers shouldn’t be blooming this late into summer."
