There was a tingling sensation on Eddie’s shoulder, like pins and needles. Heart thudding, he slid down the tree to sit on the ground. His breath caught, and he paused for a second, took a deep breath in like he was about to dive into the ocean, and yanked at the neck of his t-shirt, looking down at his collarbone, eyes searching for the soulmark.
And there, scrawled in cramped handwriting, were a pair of initials that Eddie could barely make out in the dark, tattooed right above the bone. He squinted, making out an ‘R’ and with further inspection, a ‘T’ following it.
There was a moment where Eddie remained blissfully unaware, sitting in the dark forest, the chirping of the crickets and cicadas fading away to near-silent as he processed the letters, closing his eyes and thinking.

Eddie’s eyes flew open, and the realisation came like a slap to the face.

June of 1985 — Hawkins, Indiana [4:17 PM]
The sun in Hawkins did that late–afternoon thing where everything looked like it had been dipped in orange Kool-Aid. Long shadows from mailboxes and rusting bikes stretched across the quiet street, and the cicadas were so loud it sounded like the whole town was buzzing.
Four boys walked down the sidewalk in a loose line that had quietly become an arrangement.
Up front: Mike Wheeler and Eddie Kaspbrak, shoulders squared, walking just slightly ahead like they’d been elected captains of some very weird, very specific club.
Behind them: Will Byers and Richie Tozier, side by side, a few steps back, like the shadows of their own best friends.
They hadn’t started the day like this.

“I…” The guy looked to be thinking hard for a second, before turning to glare at Richie, “You aren’t allowed to make fun of me.” He said, and he said it with such conviction that Richie just straight up agreed. Even though usually… he’d know that wasn’t a realistic expectation.
“Okaaaay.”
“I’m serious here, I know this is embarrassing and I’m a stranger but I need you to fucking promise.” He insisted, moving forward slightly in his intensity and Richie almost moved back, hands raised.
“Okay, okay, I promise. What is it?” Richie asked. How was he already whipped when he’d known this guy for two seconds?
