Gale had thought himself ready for whatever was coming — the past year had significantly increased his pain tolerance. He had known his end wouldn't be painless, but he had hoped it would be quick. It wasn’t. The black hole in his chest slowed the time around him, every second an eternity of torment, every minute a seemingly endless torture.
Gale had thought he’d face death with a raised head. That despite how low he had fallen, he’d die with some dignity. That there was something left of the archmage of Waterdeep, the youngest Chosen of Mystra.

“Gale?” It had been years since she’d last seen him. When she last saw him, he was shorter than her and always had trouble keeping his hair out of his eyes when his mother wasn’t around. Oh, how the times had changed.

Soraya Elthorn, Paladin of Mielikki, used to live in Waterdeep when she was a kid. She and Gale were best friends, but life drove a wedge between the two of them. She never expected to see him again.
