Lucy Carlyle hates Anthony Lockwood.
People, at least the people Lucy tends to hang out with, generally take this at face value. After all, everyone at Fittes knows about the Heaton House Horror (and what a horror it had been), the Bonneville Factory Terror (she can’t even look at crème eggs anymore without gagging), and the score of other cases that Lockwood and his merry band of incompetents have screwed up for her and the rest of Kipps’s crew. Anyone would dislike Lockwood after all that.
So she has good reasons, is what she’s saying. And that helps her sleep at night.
Which she needs.
Because in her heart of hearts, Lucy knows that her hatred of Anthony J. (who the hell uses a middle initial these days?) Lockwood actually stems from the night he fucked her in a storage cupboard at the Fittes New Year’s Eve party and then never called.

"And now, I’m giving it to you," had gone unspoken about a week later, as he set the necklace down on her bed along with some papers. "As a symbol of mine."
Lockwood really wished he had found the courage to say that out loud. He was a bloody fool. Assuming she would understand and leaving things unsaid (the most important things) was almost always his downfall. Especially with Lucy. Sure, he could fight off hordes of ghosts or beat just about anyone in a duel no problem- but the second he tried to ask out the girl he liked, Lockwood decided to flounder around like a Limbless.

Out of the corner of my eye, Lockwood opened his other eye, sat up and pulled his throw off.
“I haven’t got all night you know,” A familiar voice yelled down the hall.
Apparently, now our visitor was in the foyer of our house.
“Bloody hell,” I stood up and smoothed my hair down as best I could. “What does he want with me?”
“Now that is the million pound question, hmm Luce…” Lockwood’s voice was soft and sleepy, with a tinge of something sharper that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
I shrugged at him, squeezed past George and headed down the corridor to see Quill Kipps standing just inside our front door, toying with a marble statue on our hallway table. He had his back to me.
