"Varian," Rapunzel started, gesturing to him as a whole, "You've made... a lot of mistakes. You've done things that have hurt lots of people in the past. But everyone has made mistakes, good people and bad people alike. So, I'm going to ask you one thing. Do you think you're a good person?"
Varian blinked roughly, confusion slowly warping his expression. That was not what he'd been expecting to hear. At all.
"No." He said bluntly, his eyes finding their way back to the ground. There wasn't a kinder way to word it—Varian was a master of destruction. He was capable of gruesome and terrible things. No good person had the power or willingness to commit the crimes he had.
Rapunzel just smiled hopefully at him—the same smile she gave him when they were locked in a cell together.
"Do you want to be?"

Summary
“It’s just… what I don’t understand is…” Varian’s voice cracked as he began to raise his question.
It wasn’t a question of anger.
Nor was it a question of bitterness.
“Why didn’t you come back for me?”
It was a question of desperation. Desperation for an answer that Rapunzel didn’t have.
OR: Rapunzel and Varian have a much needed conversation after the Saporians are defeated.

Summary
“We need him.”
In the wake of turning against and defeating the Saporians, Varian realizes that those words can only mean one thing: parole. His freedom, in exchange for his services.
Varian has no plans to endanger his newfound tentative freedom. He'll do anything to stay out of the dungeons and away from Andrew, anything, and that means doing whatever Rapunzel wants.
So what if he never gets enough sleep? So what if he flinches every time someone raises a hand too quickly? So what if his father constantly looks at him with worried eyes?
He’s fine. It’s fine.
Everything’s fine.
