    A hand lands on Julien's shoulder as he curses and swears. His arm aches. Tears crowd into his eyes, betraying his body with their very presence. 

    "You went for my heart," Vaelus says quietly. Her voice is cool like riverwater, even-keeled and sure. "That was a killing blow." 

    "Fuck," Julien spits. He tries to wriggle out of her grip, but she holds firm. Her other arm is pressed down against his collarbone now, keeping him pinned uncomfortably on the ground. "I thought you were one of them! I had no way to know." 

    "You're eager to get into another fight tonight, Sir Davinos."

    Julien's emotions are pent-up to a dangerous degree.
    Vaelus has a lot of patience. And a lot of practice with restraints.

    The sound that escapes Occtis's mouth is completely unintentional, a crack in the perfect self-control of death. A small squeak, utterly undignified - but more than enough to send Julien scrambling upright, hissing in shock. 

    "You are awake, Tachonis." 

    Uh-oh. He sounds venomous. It's the tone of teachers, and parents, and figures of authority. The tone that means you've gone and done it now, boy. When Occtis was younger, he never understood what the it in question was. Now, dead nerve endings tingle, trying valiantly to paint his face with an embarrassed flush. The pieces of the equation he's been missing fall into place.

    Oh, no. Oh, fuck. He's miscalculated. Badly. He knows this it a bit too well.

    Occtis can't sleep anymore.
    He hasn't mentioned this fact to his companions.
    Some awkwardness ensues.

    It's an innocuous thing. It's just another piece of armor. Well, all right, fine, it's not. It's ornate, and sharp, and scary, and it obviously means something to Sir Julien Davinos. It means something, because his father had one as well, and according to the recap that Thaisha gave Occtis late at night when no one else was listening, Julien threw himself back through the Palazzo gates to claim it from his desiccated corpse.

    It means something, because Julien wears it all the time.

    Occtis has developed a fascination with Julien's weaponry.
    Surely this can only play out healthily for them both.

    No damage was done. He'd kept the upper hand. Tachonis had already come, and Julien had been so blissfully close to toppling over the edge. So surely he can be forgiven for indulging in a few more kisses than he might have otherwise. Surely his lack of witty retort against the boy's soft-muttered words is totally explainable. 

    The memory may be recurring, but that is all it is. It's a sickening, heady little fantasy - a thing that will stay trapped in Julien's chest, where it belongs. He's sure that the boy has already forgotten about the whole entire incident. Give Julien a little bit of time, a few more battles and someone better to bed, and he'll be able to do the very same. 

    Julien Davinos is at the end of his rope.
    Surely an ill-advised hookup with the Tachonis boy can't make it any worse.
