Vanitas swallowed hard. “That’s—” He tried to scoff, to sound unaffected, but his voice betrayed him, rasping and weak. “That’s enough, Noé.”
Noé didn’t move.
He was still too close, still watching him too carefully. And then, slowly, he reached out, fingers curling around Vanitas’ wrist.
Vanitas should have pulled away. Should have said something sharp and cruel to put space between them.
But he didn’t.
Instead, he let Noé’s grip tighten, let himself be drawn back in as Noé shifted closer, his breath warm against Vanitas’ lips. His heart slammed against his ribs, every nerve in his body screaming at him to run—because this was dangerous.
This was something he couldn’t take back.

Summary
Every book in the universe one day ends up at the Library. They all come to Mydei’s desk, and it’s his pleasure to catalog them. For years, from the rising to the setting of the sun, he has sat at his desk entering those books into the card catalog before passing them off to his librarians to shelve. Though the librarians are the world’s heroes, and the Library rests firmly in the control of the Head Librarian, no one disputes that the Library is his. When someone wants to find a rare tome, they come first to him.
“Enter,” he says as someone knocks on his door.
Hephaestion opens the door. “A petitioner for the cataloguer,” he says, a smile playing across his lips. Mydei looks past Hephaestion to a silvery-haired young man, eager as a puppy, expression hopeful. It is no small thing to seek out Mydei’s help, and no small expense. This puppy looks as though he could hardly afford his own dinner. “This is Phainon,” Hephaestion continues. “Of Aedes Elysiae.”
In a Library that contains more than just books, Phainon commissions Chief Cataloguer Mydei to find a particular volume of great importance to him. What they endure on their journey will change them forever.

He turns to Mydei, letting a gentle smile curve on his lips. Mydei’s eyes narrow to slits.
“Hello there,” Phainon greets softly. He crouches down, inching closer. Mydei doesn’t budge, only tenses like a tightly coiled spring. “My name is Phainon. You’re Mydeimos, right?”
Mydei doesn’t respond, lips pressed tightly shut. Phainon’s smile wavers, chest squeezing tight.
“No one’s going to hurt you here,” he murmurs, extending his arm out. Mydei growls. Fear flashes through his eyes for a fleeting second, but it’s enough to have Phainon freezing in place, breath catching in his throat.
(A mishap at the Abyss of Fate leaves Mydei a child whose only memories are of the Sea of Souls.)
