It is him.
Hua Cheng knows it is him, because he would know him anywhere, in any place and at any time and in any state. Knows the slope of his jaw and the silken strands of his hair, and the soft ivory of his skin and the curve of his shoulders.
Because he sees him in everything that is good and precious and divine; because he has been running after him, praying to him, talking to him in the private comfort of his mind for as long as he can remember.
Because it is him, and Hua Cheng’s soul would know his in a thousand lifetimes, under a million different stars, in the dirt and the mud just as well as on the streets of the divine capital.
Because Hua Cheng has loved him, will love him, does love him ever since he can remember.
Xie Lian is never banished from heaven, so Hua Cheng finds him there after he ascends himself at Mount Tonglu, and becomes, as always, Xie Lian's most devoted believer.

Angel cannot remember the last time someone touched him on purpose.
Sometimes it has happened in passing, without the other person knowing what it would cause. A brush of hands in a crowd, a cashier’s finger slipping when handing him his purchase, a small child mistaking him for someone else and grabbing his wrist.
He doesn’t care about those touches, nor about the life they take.
They aren’t meant, so they mean nothing to him.But Aki had reached out and touched him and meant it, had wrapped strong fingers around Angel’s wrist like a shackle, and pulled him back from the death Angel has been craving into a strong chest.

“Really, San Lang”, he starts, chuckling as his husband’s body tenses under his fingers, “Did you not hear me call for you?”
And San Lang whips around, dark hair flying, and the force of his movement is enough to force Xie Lian to drop his hand.
His eye is wide, lips falling open at the sight of Xie Lian, and there is something wrong, Xie Lian knows it within one beat of his heart.
Shock is etched into every of his husband’s features, his pale skin almost translucent with it, as he stares at Xie Lian like he’s a spectre, a taunt, an impossibility.“What’s wrong?”, Xie Lian asks, heart seizing up in his chest as he scans San Lang for wounds, for curse marks. His fingers have gone cold, fear coating his tongue, and he will fix this, whatever it is that has his husband look like this. “Tell me what happened.”
Xie Lian accidentally goes back in time and meets San Lang, who has not yet found him again.

Edwin had told Charles he loved him in the light of a rising sun or in between cases, when he thought Charles had done something clever and when he was sure that Charles had been very silly, when they were alone and sometimes even when Niko and Crystal were around (never around Jenny, though, and Charles was glad about that).
And it had been like a high, a rush every time, because even if Charles could never forget about that first confession, hearing it again had still felt indescribable.
Even if he couldn’t repeat the words back to Edwin and mean them in the exact same way, the thought that Edwin could love him? Incredible. Close to unbelievable. Almost too good to be true.Only that now with Peter around, Edwin is suddenly saying it less and less, and never when the other ghost is around.
After saying it several times a day, Edwin stops telling Charles he loves him (as often).
Charles might just draw the wrong conclusions.And maybe Charles shouldn’t, but he misses it.

Like, if we are already dead and we get married, then there is nothing left to part us. Makes sense, doesn’t it?”

Charles kisses him and it’s like Edwin is finding a new home in his lips, a new purpose in the hand Charles raises to cup his cheek, a new, yet familiar destiny in the little sigh he breathes into Edwin’s mouth; a kiss of life.

And Charles doesn’t notice that Edwin doesn't touch him anymore, maybe for no other reason than that he doesn’t want to, because doing so hurts, but then there’s a night when Edwin walks past him and he raises his hand like he wants to brush it against Charles’ arm – his metaphorical heartbeat picks up at that, like Charles has been waiting for this even more than he realised – but then, a second before his hand connects, Edwin pulls it back like he’s been burnt.
And that, well. That hurts too.
Edwin stops touching Charles; Charles doesn't deal well with it.

“I got us something”, Charles answers and pulls a box from the bag he’s been carrying, black and unwieldy, adorned in white scribbles. He’s holding it out like it’s something precious, which Edwin highly doubts it is, considering the look Charles gives him. “Something really really cool.”
Edwin takes a moment to look at the box, the poor quality of the cardboard and the horrible picture of teenagers that are trying to look frightened, and yes, some eye rolling will definitely be necessary here.
“Why on Earth would we need a Ouija board, Charles?”
The grin on Charles’ lips would be obnoxious if Edwin didn’t like him so much.
“To talk to ghosts, of course.”Charles gets them a Ouija board and sometimes, it's easier to talk about feelings when you don't have to say the words out-loud.

We would like to offer you a gift, Edwin Payne, the entity says, and holds out its hand; Charles has to force himself to stay put and not step between it and Edwin, because it feels like danger, even if it shouldn’t. The entity wouldn’t hurt Edwin, he tells himself, and he knows it’s true, it’s just that it is so powerful that even the slightest touch is terrifying and Charles is terrified about losing Edwin all the time anyway.
“Why me?”, Edwin asks, head raised high and the entity’s light reflecting off his skin in a way that makes it look like porcelain, fragile and translucent and beautiful, “Why not Charles?”
There is nothing we could offer Charles Rowland to take his pain away, the entity says and its voice rings out in Charles’ head. But you, we could erase yours. If you wish us to.
Edwin gets the opportunity to go back in time and change his life so he will never have to go to Hell, but price of it is losing Charles; Charles can only stand next to him and wait for his decision.

Edwin phases through the wall right next to Crystal’s TV and it is a wonder and a testament to her mental fortitude that she doesn’t throw her bowl of ice cream right through his head.
And he’d deserve that, too, not just because barging into other people’s apartments without knocking is rude, but because Crystal had made it very clear that she needed an evening to herself, with absolutely no dead boys around, just her, too many snacks and the mental equivalent of fast food that is Love Island.
Charles is acting strange, and Edwin needs some help figuring out why.

“That makes sense”, he eventually says, speaking slowly, almost like he is still thinking about it. “In that case, I shall endeavour to tell you more often.”
Edwin tells Charles he loves him again and again, until Charles can say it back.

“Crystal, what has happened here?”, he asks, and a few seconds later, their new psychic is standing in front of him, trousers splashed with the coffee she dropped, disbelief written across her face. “I was gone for a few hours and now Charles… and the whole building…”
He’s not quite sure how to put it, most likely because he still doesn’t understand, and Crystal looks at him like he come back from the Cat King’s lair with an additional head.
“Edwin”, she says, slowly, like she is still searching for the words, “what are you talking about? You’ve been gone for six weeks.”____________
Edwin takes the Cat King up on his initial offer, so instead of a few hours, he is gone for six weeks.

There is something said about the concept of hindsight, only that Edwin isn’t sure if it’s something good, per se.
Because now that he knows what he feels for Charles, it’s like his brain is working overtime just to make sure that he is, in fact, in love with Charles, which is slightly ridiculous, since it only takes a single look for Edwin to confirm it again and again and again. It’s the way his heart flutters, his eyes get stuck on one of Charles’ features, his fingertips aching for the warm buzz touching Charles grants him.
And yet, in those quiet moments between cases, or sometimes deep at night when they are both busy with their own research, Edwin’s mind wanders through the three decades they have known each other, searching and finding those moments in which Edwin could have known he was in love with Charles, had he ever allowed himself to consider the possibility.Edwin goes down a trip down memory lane, and Charles needs someone to spell it out to him that he is in love.
