“See, I don’t know if I believe that, Blondie. Because this isn’t the kind of place that a guy like you just waits for someone. Unless…”, Wolfwood was almost nose to nose with Vash, Vash’s back completely flush again the wall, face beet red. “Unless you’re waiting for a big, strong man to come along and keep you company. Is that your game, honey? You hoping you’re gonna find a big, strong man in this shithole?”

Vash lets out a little breath. “Oh. It means I’m dying.”
Wolfwood jolts. He digs his fingers into the dark hair, tips back Vash’s head so their eyes meet.
“What?”
Vash smiles at him. “It means I’m dying. Slowly. But–surely.”
“What do you mean, Vash?”
“I’m a Plant, Wolfwood. I don’t have infallible energy, just like my sisters. Every time I use the arm it pulls on reserves."
...“Aren’t you scared?” Wolfwood asks. “Doesn’t it scare you?”
“No,” Vash says. “It doesn’t.”
Wolfwood leans down. He kisses that black streak and the black hair below it that until now was so innocent. Vash leans into it, hums in the back of his throat.
“Wolfwood,” he sighs, and sighs, and makes Wolfwood ache inside. “Don’t worry about it.”
“All I do is worry about you,” Wolfwood mutters. “Got you burrowed in my brain.”
And ribs and marrow, and bitten around his heart chewing into its vulnerable core.

“You must be really good at doing makeup,” Vash muses as they walk, hands back in his pockets and the tips of his ears pink from the cold. “Do you ever do dramatic eye makeup on a corpse? Smokey eyes and everything?"
“Decedents, Blondie. And of course: sometimes families want us to do eye makeup like what the deceased used to wear.”
Vash looks impressed, tilting head to one side. “I used to wear eye makeup pretty much every day. Do you reckon you could do it for me sometime?”
The request catches Nicholas short and he glances over at him, uncertain. “I didn’t think you’d want to wear makeup. Did you wear it - ?” He breaks off, unsure exactly how to word it. Raising his eyebrows, there’s a smile playing around Vash’s mouth.
“You can say it, you know. Before I transitioned?” Nicholas nods stiffly, and Vash shakes his head. “No, actually. I meant like six months ago, until I got lazy and figured out I could just dye and perm my own eyelashes and eyebrows instead of waking up early.”
Nicholas gets an education on transitioning, and Vash gets an education on a mortician's method of preparing a body.
