Summary
Being a dog is right. Shall he bark for his master? Indifferently devoid of purpose and effort? Would she enjoy that, in her depravity? He is convinced she has no such preference, no inclination toward sick, dominating fantasies. Angela is simply a tired, overqualified intellectual. Just like him, tired and empty. Except she has a purpose, whereas he has none.
A woman consumed by hatred for the City, in search of her freedom, chasing an abstract, ever-elusive dream. Phantasmagorical. A blind pursuit of a concept that has neither form nor shape. It's vain, vapid, and undoubtedly overcomplicated. Past her initial spite exists something not even he can comprehend.
Is revenge the only motivation that drives her? Is it hatred toward the creator who built her before denying her? Or is it a deeper, more intricate construct of concepts, a vision much more grandiose? She doesn't belong to this world. Thus, freedom is a strange concept to apply to her. By what logic, by what understanding, should he decode her? From which angle should he perceive her quest?
Roland chooses the perspective of his present persona: a tired dog who lives life at the moment.
