Weird. Weird. Viktor had looked so pleased just a few moments ago. Almost glowing. Maybe even happy, for a split second; the sort of thing he only ever is when one of his prototypes turns out successful. Jayce had managed to land a comment smart enough to wring a laugh out of Viktor; and he'd smiled like they were having fun, but now here's that thing again. The borders, the quiet nudging, pushing him away as if he's unable to recognize it. No one else does this to him, not anymore; not when his face is on the newspapers and his name is on everyone's mouths. It's only Viktor.
"Do you hate me?" Jayce asks, before he has a chance to process which words his mouth is forming.
It feels childish, out in the open cold, spoken like that. It feels like a stupid thought.

For the first time in a long while, Jayce feels like they're really seeing each other.
"You really are mad, aren't you?" Viktor asks, but he sounds like finally believes in him.
Jayce shrugs. "Comes with the job."”

When Mel Medarda realizes that she's completely ignored Viktor's potential as a scientist, as an academic, she quickly seeks to remedy that. He may not be Jayce Talis, but he has his own brain, and he seems to be far more useful than most think. She's a practical woman, after all- it would be useful to have another genius on her side.
And when she realizes Viktor is also in love with Jayce Talis, and Jayce loves them both? She's still practical, after all-- she sees an opportunity.
(Or, Mel and Viktor are more similar than one might think. That applies to who they love, but it applies to how they love too.)

“Worse than last time?” Jayce posits a guess.
“It’s, eh-” Viktor shrugs. Tilts his chin this way and that. A tsk. “Bearable. I’ve endured worse hangovers in college.” he was going for a laugh, but the punchline never truly lands. Instead, Jayce’s thumb rubs softly into the back of his palm, pressing like he wants to idle the muscle mass into something new. It’s such a small thing, whatever this is, and yet it steadies the flow of his blood; the relief of loosening a valve, flicking off a pressure switch. It’s the necessary cracking-open of his breast. Jayce squeezes. Viktor allows himself the luxury of a sigh. “You shouldn’t be here.” he mutters.
Jayce reflexively shakes his head. “I took the day off.”
“We both know that’s-”
“—I could take the week.” he insists, almost a threat, a flicker of that eternal stubbornness coursing through him.

Summary
It is the early years of Jayce and Viktor's scientific partnership, and the Distinguished Innovators competition is only three days away. That is, if they can get all the work done for it in time when Jayce is exhausted, overworked, and at risk of burning out entirely before they even make it there.
So when Jayce jokingly asks Viktor to take control and tell him what to do, in the hopes that it will help Jayce relax and get some much needed sleep before the competition, he was not expecting Viktor to so readily oblige. Nor was he expecting what happened after.

Don’t you see, it’s not my health I’m worried about? Jayce thought but didn’t say aloud because god, Viktor didn’t need any more reminders in his life. Don’t you see that if we fail here, it might mean we don’t have enough time to save you? Do you have any idea what it would do to me, if I had to watch you die someday because I didn’t do enough, didn’t work hard enough when there was still a chance?
“Right. Thanks, Viktor,” was all he said. Jayce gestured vaguely, as if to take in the whole conversation. “Anyway, there’s your answer, if it still matters. There’s no one. Not for, uh, not for a long time.”
“I see,” Viktor said somberly. He let out a sigh and said, “What about masturbation?”
Jayce put his head in his hands and began to laugh hysterically.
