Rin was ready to torture that man, she could feel the cuts of Sister Petra’s dagger and all the shit he went through without her. She could feel his dragon. She could feel it taking his mind like the phoenix was taking hers. But did she care? No, if she did she couldn’t hate him so much. She could always feel his scars, what’s a little more? She could feel the connection between her soul and Nezha’s, and it felt like shit. Absolute shit. It felt like he was tying her to him, a tug of a chain. Gods dammit, why didn’t I choose Kitay as my anchor? How had she been so naive?
A sliver of movement. So swift like the cut of moonlight between trees. A silhouette, a tall and familiar one. Yin Nezha. Great Nezha, Vaisra’s poor son.

Hello, Rin. Hope you’re enjoying the palace. Did you take my old rooms?
That was something Rin would do if only to make it clear that she had won. As if it even mattered anymore, with the country on the verge of starvation. Nezha could imagine her sleeping in his bed, tangled in his sheets, her head on his pillows as she drifted off into what she thought was a well-earned sleep after destroying his city.
Nezha could see her clearly– stripping off her uniform, leaving it on a pile on the floor, and sprawling on his bed as if it had always been hers. The moonlight streaming in from the window would turn her bronze skin silver.
He grasped his brush with one hand as the other reached into his trousers. The missive would reach her, one way or another.

A soft knock sounded at the door. It was so quiet that at first Rin thought it might have been someone accidentally brushing against her door on their way down the hall. But no – there, a shadow below the bottom edge of the wood. The almost-silent creak of the floors as someone shifted their weight between feet.
She threw the door open with enough force to make the person on the other side jump back, dark eyes widening.
“Nezha?”
“Rin.” He spoke her name quickly, in one breath.
