Summary
For the safety of himself and those around him, Bucky has always stressed one simple rule: don't wake him up from a nightmare.
While staying in Sam's Louisiana home, one of Sam's nephews unthinkingly breaks this rule. With the Winter soldier at the reigns and his hand wrapped around Cass's throat, Sam has a choice to make.
Bucky's mind slips between past and present. One moment he's with HYDRA, the next he's hovering over Sam with a knife in his hand. Sarah's kitchen is destroyed, her son is terrified, Sam's bleeding, and Bucky must face the consequences of what he's done. Sam keeps telling him it's not his fault, but he doesn't know if he'll ever be able to forgive himself.
Or: Bucky has nightmares. He and Sam have a brutal fight. They talk it through and reminisce while Bucky tries to come to terms with the sins of his past. After Sam helps him through another rough night, Bucky meets with Sarah to try to make amends, but talking about his life has never been easy.

Summary
He's not unused to Bucky's nightmares. Sometimes they're random, confusing things. Sometimes they're real scenes from his life he already remembers. And sometimes they're new memories pushing their way to the surface. Those ones in particular usually leave Bucky quieter, more withdrawn for a day or two. This is the first time he's ever seen one trigger this sort of reaction in Bucky, though.
Or: Bucky still hasn't chased down all the spectres of his past. One comes back to haunt him.
Good thing Sam doesn't believe in ghosts.

“That idiot,” Sam growled out, shaking his head with vehemence. "He couldn’t have waited? Couldn’t have held off just five damn minutes for someone with the right gear? The room wasn’t going anywhere! It would’ve been fine to just wait, and now look where he is!”
“He’ll be okay, Sam,” Torres said, voice still quiet as he maneuvered the jet upwards and away. “He’s tough.”
“Whatever toxin that was was tougher,” Sam muttered, shaking his head. “He stopped breathing, Torres.”
While on a mission, Bucky takes a hit, and doesn't get back up. Sam helps him recover. (Or: shameless Bucky Barnes whump that I did way too much research into airborne poisoning and recovery for.)

His brows furrow further, eyes narrowing as well like he's trying to suss out whether or not she's lying to him, and then drift over her shoulder, to some point behind her, and widen.
She frowns, turning around and trying to follow his gaze, but she can't figure out what he's looking at. There are still quite a lot of people milling about even at this late hour, though she supposes that's Vegas—or the outskirts of Vegas—for you, but nobody looks at all threatening. The most out-of-place person is a sharply-dressed man carrying a briefcase amongst all the people in going-out attire, but it's not like he's brandishing a weapon at them. "Reid, what—"

It’s been almost ten years since he’s been in recovery. He wasn’t planning on it being a problem again. He’s an adult now—older, stronger, more capable of finding healthy ways to cope with the stress of his life. Bruce would be so disappointed if he found out Dick had relapsed into his eating disorder because of him.
Dick can’t even say what the tipping point is, if it’s really about Bruce's untimely death or if this was simply the final straw in a long line of terrible events.

It would have been an easy kill, under better circumstances, except Talon didn’t know that his target somehow possessed combat skills that could rival even the oldest and most deadly Talons in the compound. Talon never stood a chance.
