Summary
Stan shudders as he mentally flexes his arms and throws out a worn rope in order to lasso his thoughts back in the folder where he Does Not Dwell On His Brother. Focus, he scolds himself, and hogties a memory of Ford that kept him turning restlessly for nights on end, that seemed to stretch like hot taffy, desperately comparing it to the silver screen’s expressions of people falling in love.

Summary
His sight still adjusting to the light, he hears an ethereal, distant voice call his name without being able to recognize it yet. He blinks rapidly and turns his head in the direction of the sound, coming from outside of the manor, and sees a figure hasting towards him. She is clad in a pale colored dress that she has hoisted up, baring her creamy calves, so as to not trip over the skirt, and her long, brown hair is flowing behind her like a shawl. Ford has never seen her before.
-
Returning home to his family estate for the first time in ten years, Ford soon finds that not everything is as he left it, and he himself might be in for more than he bargained for.

Summary
He knows the plan is stupid. He has just enough self-respect left to at least admit that quietly to himself as he swallows past the unmoving lumps in his throat, wondering if the most stubborn one of them is, in fact, his own tongue. But he has no choice.
-
Following an explosive argument, Ford decides to run after his sister into the night, fearing she will get hurt or worse; find the man of her dreams.

Summary
Sure, Ford got the message that a man only capable of being in love with his own mirror image, never another person, to the point of tipping over and drowning to death was supposed to be a warning, but Ford figured that that had more to do with the fact that the poor sod did not know how to swim. Whereas Ford himself grew up by the shore.

Summary
Stan’s skin tightens and turns decidedly uncomfortable, as if his pores are turning into wiggling ants with a zest for life. He clears his throat. “I, uh, I met this sexy lady… monster… who was, eh, made out of marinara sauce.” He huffs, feigning confidence in his story. “Yeah. I was just, you know, walkin’ down the street, hootin’ and tootin’ and whistlin’ a tune, as you do, when I smelled something from a restaurant window, and saw this–... This, uh, you know Pamela Anderson, right?”
“No.”
-
Stan cannot stay out of trouble and Ford cannot not fix it.

Summary
He knows the person lying in the closed casket at the end and middle of the smoky, tired formal room is not Ford. He knows that Ford can still come back. He knows he can still fix everything. And therefore, he cannot bring himself to say goodbye to a man called Stan Pines, because that would contradict everything that Stan himself knows, and that would be lying, and Ford would not like that one bit. Ford never liked it when he told lies.

Summary
He should not have taken that teaching job, possibly, but he was curious. And naive. He was aspiring to inspire himself, at least. He was, perhaps, hopeful that he would come up with a way to make the inevitable split between his younger self and Stan less painful, that he could intervene and prevent it from turning into the rift that could never be fixed in his own life. He is getting sentimental, he supposes.
But the consequences of his own actions are reaching levels of ridiculousness that should not be sustainable for the fabric of the universe.

Summary
Stan tastes like salty saliva and whispers of sweet-sharp rum, because he likes to pretend they are pirates and take swigs from a jug of the cheapest hooch, he could steal in Cuba. His beard is getting soft enough to not scrape rashes onto Ford’s chin. Some days, he jokes about dying it red and buying Ford a fake one to match so that they can be the reincarnated Barbarossa brothers and plunder the seas in style.

Summary
Ford is in charge of his own institute now, though, and their parents are dead and in the ground, so their approval is out of anyone’s reach. The race is over. Stan figures Shermie came in first, with himself following semi-close once Ford had forgiven him and Stan turned out to be the one child to move their parents into a nursing home, but the whole game was as if they were three people with as many legs between them trying to run the mile.
At least Stan kept his parental disappointment consistent, Ford made the grave mistake of showing promise.
