"What do you really want?" Tom asks, a hair too desperate than he intended.
"To be friends." Pete says it so slowly, as if he’s explaining the concept for someone who has never heard it before.
"Why?" The word breaks out of Tom like it’s trying to escape before he shuts it away.
"Because otherwise the whole circuit is going to be miserable,” Pete says fiercely. His expression, Tom is horrified to realize, is his determined game face, the same one Pete wears on the court. Tom thinks that it might be match point in Pete’s favor and he hadn’t even realized they were playing. “This sport can tear people down. I refuse to be one of them.”
It’s Pete’s first year on the circuit and he’s determined to keep his head above water. Far too many people worked together to get him here and he’s not about to let them down.
Tom has no interest in making friends, but that won’t stop Pete.

Summary
Maverick wouldn’t admit it, but he was nervous. There was less than an hour until Ice was supposed to show up and take him on a date and he was panicking just a bit. Not that he would tell anyone. If they asked, he was calm, composed, and ready for the date. In reality, Mav was scared. Scared that Ice was doing this as a joke, scared that it wasn’t a joke but Ice would realize that he wasn’t worth it after spending time with him, scared that he would do something to mess the date up.
Or, Maverick and Iceman are trying to have their first date, but things keep going wrong, from Ice forgetting the tickets to the comedy show to Mav stabbing himself with a butter knife.

Ice ignored the laughter that rang out through the locker room and focused on getting his gear put away so he could shower and make his way to a base clinician who’d handle the feathers Ice couldn’t manage. As he walked past Maverick toward the showers, he tried not to pay attention to the effortless way Maverick’s hands moved across Goose’s wings or his apparent ease at helping his friend.
Ice has been taught that preening is a necessary but impersonal activity. Maverick has other ideas.

He appreciates Maverick’s outfit in a completely straight and normal way. Taking the spot next to the other man, he takes care to plant his feet in a completely natural and normal manner.
“Maverick, thank you for extending the invite.” He says, like he rehearsed it fifteen times in the rearview mirror before leaving his car. “It’s good to see you.”
AKA, Maverick invites Cyclone to a night out at the Hard Deck. Cyclone is entirely normal about it.
