Summary
When Detective Jim Gordon joined the GCPD, he swore to himself that he would be different from the cops that he grew up with. He would be honest, trustworthy, and not bought and paid for by the criminals that ran Gotham. It was far from perfect, but he prided himself on always putting Gotham's citizens first.
And then the Batman showed up.

She licked her chapped lips, then continued, "Look, if things had been different, I would never have told you the truth and we would all have continued with our lives. But Jack has decided to become a rich widower, who knows maybe he wants to marry one of his mistresses. I don't know and I don't care. What matters to me is that when I'm gone, Timothy may have someone to rely on. Can you do at least that?"
Bruce hesitated. There were tons of reasons to say no. Too many.
But that was a dying woman's wish. Who was he to deny it?
"Okay, Janet," he finally gave up.
“I will take care of Timothy.”
She smiled weakly, "Then you're not a coward like I thought."

After Jason's death, Bruce has to start over. He doesn't have the luxury of giving himself up to crime-fighting with no quarter, not with a child to take care of.

Dick shrugs, fiddling with the sleeves of his sweater, "I guess. I've never had my own room before. It is very… cold."
"I can tell Alfred to turn the heating up in here," Bruce immediately says, grimacing when Dick looks almost embarrassed, eyes trained down on the rug in the middle of the room.
"No! No, not cold like that," he grumbles, hunching in on himself, "It is lonely, being the only one. I used to sleep next to mama and papa."
Bruce imagines knocking himself out with an inflatable hammer, "Oh. Right."
(Bruce stops a city from drowning, goes to the circus and becomes a toy maker — in that order.)

Summary
Gordon is the closest one to the Batman. Gotham has assumed he knows who’s under the mask. Truth is, he really doesn’t, and he’s not sure anyone believes him.
But then there are these clues. Small, unnoticeable things sprinkled between the frequent meetings with the Batman and the occasional spotting of Bruce Wayne. And maybe the cogs are starting to turn for Gordon. Maybe he’s starting to connect the dots between Gotham’s infamous vigilante and very own prince.
Or maybe he’s making it all up in his head.
