Summary
It feels real, it feels right. Her stomach warms with wine and affection the longer she looks at him, the softer his eyes go, the colder their dinner gets as they giggle and gripe at each other like nothing’s ever broken their hearts.
For the first time in a long time, she lets herself think it: I miss you.

And that’s without adding any weight to the amount of self-restraint she had to exercise in order to keep from informing him at any given moment that Conrad loved eating her pussy, that Conrad begged to eat her pussy, that Conrad asked questions and watched her face and paid attention to even the minutest muscular shifts of her body and remembered what they meant and how to provoke them. That one time, Conrad told her that eating her pussy was like a form of stress relief for him, and that to this day it was the hottest thing anyone had ever said to her in her life.

ch16
“I am very afraid,” Hatake says. “Mostly, I am afraid of the sudden ray of hope. Before—None of us had much strength to hope for the better before you came along. Now, we saw a glimpse of our enemies’ honour and our own capacity for forgiveness and healing and I don’t know how to live with it. I don’t know what I will do if I am not able to protect it.”Ani has nothing. Not even empty platitudes. “I guess that—Well, none of us know the future. We don’t know if death is around the corner. So, the only thing to do is stack the odds in your favour as much as you can, and also try to live as good a life as you can, every day.”
Hatake’s fraught expression shifts. Calms, maybe. Who knows, with him? He’s as high-strung as they come and twice as mercurial. One moment, he’s sweet and solicitous, generous with cuddles and bursting with confidence, the next he’s fury-blind and miserable. “Honour, we are taught,” he says. “Duty. Life is a frightening stumble through the dark, but we endure so that the group thrives. Alone, we are nothing. True worth lies in the collective.”
Well, alright. That sounds good enough, in principle. Creepy and far too easy to exploit, but the base is sound. Humans are pack animals. They will go mad and die if forced into isolation. “A bit grim,” he ventures to try nevertheless. “And a bit overwrought? Maybe? I get that you are all about purpose and worth and all that, but I don’t see why it needs to be so dramatic.” Like they’re writing a play, only they’re not even main characters. No, they’re these insignificant gnats in the background, on whose bones the real players will live. “Look at the rabbits,” he says, nodding. This feels true enough. “Do you think they bother much about the grand, unified purpose of rabbitdom? No. They live and love and get on with things, and some of them die and there are plenty of big, fast things from which to run, but that’s just how it is.”
Hatake blinks at him with yellow eyes, set in his fanged face, and inclines his head. “I see. We should all be more like the rabbits.”
Ani rolls his head. “Wolves, fine, whatever. You know what I mean. It all circles back to the same thing. A little romanticism is great because it lets you write music and carve pretty cribs for your young. Too much, and you have mass slaughter in the name of some nebulous idea most of you don’t even know about, much less believe in.”

Summary
The bodyguard is incredibly well-respected in the superhero single parent community. He is also, Tony’s realizing, something of an asshole.

Jason shrugs, hands still in his pockets. His Gotham Blades t-shirt stretches across his impressive shoulders. With his arms bare like that, Tony can see old scars traced across his skin. Long thin lines across the blades of his forearms, souvenirs from what might have been a hell of a knife fight or just a bad day with Wolverine, and something that is very clearly an old burn scar across the back of his left elbow.
He looks so young, is the thing. Young and handsome and smugly at-home in his own torn-up and patched-together skin.
- “Hey,” Tony says, “what’s my ringtone? When I call you, what plays?”
Jason glances back at him. There’s a look on his face, half-mischief and half-challenge. It’s a good look for him. Almost unfairly good, when combined with the lazy sprawl of his limbs and the stretch of fabric over all that muscle. Tony finds something else to look at.
“Can’t remember,” Jason says, with a laugh in his voice like he’s lying. “Maybe someday you’ll find out.”
-chapter10
There he is, dark blob of black hair and a smear of blue in the center of his chest. He’s wearing a stunningly brazen strappy red dress and ankle-breaking heels. He looks, in a word, amazing.“Good God,” he says, plucking the sheet off the coffee table, “what a stunningly accurate depiction of my inner self. So flattering to my girlish figure, Mia. Thanks.”
“Settle down, Stark,” Jason says, grinning up at him. “I’m definitely the prettiest princess at this ball.”
Tony huffs out a skeptical breath. “How could you possibly--- oh my God.”
Tony has absolutely no idea what kind of advertisement this particular body’s been cut out of. A Halloween store, maybe? Some kind of theatrical production? Mia’s picked a very tight, very Spandex, very lady in a black catsuit body for Jason.
“Good gracious me,” Tony says. “I hope you kept that outfit.”
“Oh, sure,” Jason says, tone deceptively mild while Mia giggles herself sick beside him. “I keep it for when I’m behind on rent.”
Tony chokes on nothing and sends him a sharp look. The smile Jason gives back to him is so blandly benevolent that he must’ve stolen it from a Mother Mary statue. Tony suppresses the urge to cross himself.
Lucky landlord, Tony thinks, but doesn’t say.
-c13
“It’s a formal occasion, asshole,” Jason says. “You’re in one, too.”“I acknowledge that it’s a formal occasion,” Tony says. “I would like to point out, if you’ll humor me, that we have attended equally formal occasions in the past. You wore a suit.”
A perfectly nice suit. A perfectly bland suit. A suit that made him look like a bodyguard, like pleasant wallpaper with especially intriguing cheekbones. A suit that did not make him look like some kind of wayward moneyed scion, fresh from yachting around the Caribbean, spending his twelfth gap year in a row wandering from one modeling gig to another.

Summary
What if Triwizard Tournament, but Hunger Games?
Centuries ago, instead of hiding from muggles with the Statute of Secrecy, wizards used a ritual to create a dimension for all magical beings to live openly. But maintaining that freedom comes at a lethal price. Every seven years, the worthiest students in Europe have the great honour of being selected to compete in a tournament: three deadly tasks, two months of training, one victor. Grindelwald’s Ministry demands it. But certain troublesome students only follow rules which happen to align with their own plans.
Tom Riddle intends to win. Harry Potter refuses to lose. From rivalry comes respect, and an intense interest that, once sparked, refuses to burn out. They are binary stars locked in orbit in a world built to break them apart. But the world doesn’t define them, their choices do: what they decide to fight for, and who they choose to trust. If they get those right, they might be able to define the world.

Bookmarker's Notes
Tom Riddle ignores it all. He rises gracefully and basks in the applause despite it being half-hearted – or maybe because of it. His smirk seems to say look how they all fall in line; hate me, fear me or love me; they all do as I say.
I fight to protect people, not because I like hurting them,” Harry objects.
Riddle rolls his eyes. They catch the light, flashing gold for a moment. “Spare me your Gryffindor virtuosity. Noble sentiment is certainly not why you want to fight me. You want to push your luck, your limits. You enjoy the struggle. You don’t need to win, and that sets you apart from the people who do. People who like to win don’t like to fight because there’s a chance they could lose. They only engage if they’ve got the upper hand. They fall apart the moment they perceive they’re at a disadvantage. You’re used to it. Setbacks don’t faze you, can’t keep you down. You’re scrappy. You’re the textbook underdog. It’s not about winning. You’ll pick any fight if it’s a good fight.”
Riddle ducks closer and his too-wide grin is all Harry can see.
“A good fight is a challenge. It’s one mistimed shield away from the hospital wing. It’s your opponent trying everything they’ve got because they have to take you seriously. It’s thinking you’re going to lose and then thinking again. It’s the frustration, the fear, the excitement, sharpened into aggression. Tell me it doesn’t make your blood sing.”
