Between Yuna and David stood a man with dark eyes and a strong nose, a familiar, awkward-in-front-of-cameras smile stretched across his face. Ilya’s consciousness crept back into his body only to be deafened by the pounding of his heart in his ears. His fingers still did not feel like they belonged to him. He brought the card close, too close, to his face, but the photo was nowhere near the level of resolution that would have allowed Ilya to detect freckles.
Ilya’s eyes moved to the text on the bottom of the card. It read, “Happy Holidays from the Hollanders! Love, Yuna, David, and Shane.”
Ilya and Shane were inseparable in high school until it all fell apart.
Now, years later, Ilya returns to Ottawa for a day to clean out his old room after his father's death. He plans to be in and out quickly, but when he learns Shane is also trans, he's too curious to not show up to the Hollanders' holiday party.

Summary
Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.
Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.
His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.
But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"
By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.
But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…
Shane says yes.
And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.
