At 12:55 in the morning, Adam went to his back door. He stood awkwardly next to it, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet and peering out its window with his hand cupped to block the light. He saw nothing. The minutes before the deadline seemed to stretch on forever, Adam straining to hear any movement in his back yard.
When the time came he held his breath and turned the doorknob all the way so it would make as little noise as possible. Then he pulled the door open, and the breath escaped him in a sigh when he saw his twin there.
