Storm clouds and sillouhetted trees, overlaying the sunset.

(also known as, 'YOU'RE BACK ON YOUR ASSHOLE GRANDPA'S PRIVATE ISLAND')

A guest Beatrice swears she didn't invite brings with her a game board to pass the time. As always, Battler rises to the challenge, but aside from the, er, unique writing style, there's one very important thing to know about this game- Battler Ushiromiya doesn't exist.

The framing device of Umineko almost dares its readers to write their own "forgeries" – fanfic of an apocryphal version of the Rokkenjima Massacre.

But very few completed fan-forgeries exist. How many authors have something complicated enough to say about Umineko, that they're willing to go through the trouble? 150,000 words – the amount usually necessary to complete an Umineko gameboard – is no small mountain to climb.

This author did have something to say, and, over the course of Wanderlust, brilliantly articulated it.

    Summary

Kindness is not a virtue, not in Fallen London. Hester knows this all too well. Sentimentality will cost you everything in this city and only a fool would risk anything for a Rubbery Man stupid enough to let themselves be cornered. But she's a woman who has always learned things the hard way, and this lesson is no exception to that rule.

    Summary

This is not how ordinary people function. But Courier hasn't been ordinary since Benny put a round in her skull and buried her under three inches of topsoil (didn't even bury her all the way down, lazy bastard). Some switch deep in her head got flipped from OFF to ON, or from NO to YES. And so that one who used to live in this body died and this one who came from the dark woke up and now she's the kind of woman who can't tell you where she's from but can carry five hundred radioactive rockets in her bags everywhere she goes without breaking a sweat.

(“I really love your creative way of looking at things! We could be carrying weapons or ammunition or something like that, but I like that you're using that space to carry around rockets instead! It's so very you!" Yes Man says in his cheerful passive-aggressive way.

"You never know when you're going to need a large quantity of toy rockets for bartering purposes! Sooner or later, we'll find the right stop and make ourselves millionaires." She replies back, just as cheerful, just as passive-aggressive.)

    Summary

For the Incubators, a diagnosis of "mental illness" is as simple as having a personal interest outside producing negentropy – for example, in wordplay. Kyubey, the assigned Incubator for Mitakihara City's magical girls in their fight against wraiths, is diagnosed with an unnecessary emotion after making an unprompted joke, and scheduled for execution and replacement. It accepts gracefully, knowing its death serves the purpose of fighting entropy... right up until it can't.

In for a penny, in for breaking and rewriting your identity, as they say.

    Bookmarker's Notes

disclaimer: i'm mutuals with this fic's author on another website so my opinion may be biased

    but the combination of

    • the worldbuilding
    • the precise construction of an Increasingly Incredible Situation, and
    • "miss kyubey"'s third person subjective narration, through a series of fully believable steps, slowly tilting off the plumb-line and into the waiting hands of "neoteny, flowers, and lace"

has been an incredible experience so far and promises to only get better as things proceed

p.s. i didn't realize pmmm needed a wakaba but now that nomura-chan is here i feel like i could take a fictional bullet for her
