"She imagined that in some ways she was finally really taking control of her life. Finally, selfishly, putting herself first. Except, she never imagined it would be putting herself first over Derek. Derek who had been there for her for everything for the last year. When she was 16, she used to always imagine what it would be like to never have to interact with him again. It was a comforting fantasy then. Now, the idea of it was sickening even as she chose it. So, she still couldn’t quite process the fact that the life she was finally taking the reins of, was a life without Derek."

"Casey."
She met his eyes. To his credit, he looked sincere, but he always looked sincere. Especially when he was making fun of her. It was part of what made him so impossible.
"Derek."
Their eyes were locked. She didn't dare blink. To blink in front of Derek was to lose in front of Derek. Who knew how many pranks he could pull in the time her eyes would be closed?//
Casey teaches Derek how to parallel park. That's the essential plot, but that's not the entire fic, not even close.
