Sam fumbled for another cigarette from the newly opened pack and lit it. The lighter flame danced in his eyes, somehow doing nothing to make them feel less empty. Grian was struck by the sudden notion that it was just him and Sam alone in the world, and that the staticky flame was the only light for miles. He knew the idea was false and that Taurtis was sleeping just above them, but the late night and deep shadows made it difficult not to pretend.

Sometimes Grian can’t sleep, and sometimes Sam can’t sleep either. Sometimes they talk, sometimes they yell. Neither of them mention it the next morning.
