Summary
Stiles doesn’t know how it started. Maybe it was when Derek began to finally relax around the pack, occasionally showing off a brilliant smile that Stiles hadn't been initially prepared for. He had always been so gloomy and brooding in the beginning, when they first met. But things had changed. To put it simply, Derek’s smile was beautiful. Seeing Derek smile genuinely made Stiles' heart skip a beat sometimes, especially when that gorgeous smile was directed at him specifically. He realized with mild embarrassment that any of the wolves around him likely noticed the uptick in his heart's rhythm, but were too kind to say anything.
Thinking Derek’s smile was beautiful was certainly one thing. That was something normal to think, right? He was a nice looking guy, that was all! Stiles was pretty sure that everyone had some kind of crush on Derek; it was hard not to. But what had started as an innocent hyper fixation with some pretty pearly whites ended up going south way too quickly.

The guy hates him. Derek’s made sure he does. So the fact that he’s suddenly fumbling in through his bedroom window, shaking and sweating and breathing heavily and just about delirious at the overwhelming smell and sight of Stiles in front of him, doesn’t make sense to either of them.
OR: the fic where Derek’s known from the beginning that Stiles is a compatible mate, but has tried his best to keep it a secret, for multiple reasons. And he manages that, until his body finally betrays him years later.
