It was the sort of case that generally would have been assigned to whatever patrolman could be spared to file a half-hearted report, but Parker was still in the Chief Inspector’s black books after refusing to allow the local magistrate’s son off a drunk and disorderly charge and then doing his best impression of a plank of wood to all hints dropped. The boy had been released less than twenty-four hours later as it was and no worse for wear than any young man would be. He had not, Parker had noticed when he checked the record the following day, paid the 5 shilling fee.
