Summary
“—And make sure he actually stays in bed,” Shinobu says, giving Giyuu a pointed look. “I know how stubborn he is, but you cannot let him push himself. He needs rest, or the wound will reopen.”
Giyuu gives a small nod. “The Master has given me a week off as well.” His voice is quiet, steady. “To take care of him.”
Sanemi’s stomach sinks. Not only does Giyuu know, but he’s going to be watching Sanemi like a damn hawk the entire time, taking care of him like he’s some sick child.
Could this get any worse?
~~~
OR: Sanemi gets hurt on a mission, Giyuu takes care of him.
Summary
" 'I invited Muichiro to live with me,' Tomioka says, 'and he accepted. So I wanted to-'
'Why the fuck would you do that?' Sanemi blurts, more confusion coating his voice than anger now.
'He's a child. I wanted to know if you'd consider coming with us.'
'This is a terrible idea, me and you.'
'I know,' Tomioka sighs, 'but I can't ask anyone else.' "
Or, the war is over, leaving only Giyuu, Sanemi and Muichiro as the surviving Pillars. Though broken and alone, there's half a chance they'll be able to make themselves whole again with one another- even if they're the world's worst roommates.
Summary
There is a new temple in London.
This is not so unusual. Dream has been…away, as his sister says, for over a century. Even had he not been, he does not map the Waking so thoroughly as to always see these things when they start. Places of love, of devotion, spring up from time to time. He leaves them be; they are not, generally speaking, his business.
What is unusual is that this one is shaped like a pub, and it is very much his business.
Dream contemplates The New Inn as he approaches.
Hob’s actions while Dream is away have consequences neither of them anticipated.
Summary
Hob is a long line of heat along Dream’s back, October rain pattering softly against the windows, and Dream pushes back against him, tugging Hob closer, closer still. He knows, without a fissure of doubt on a random Sunday morning, according to a calendar that his own world does not adhere to, that he does not care what the Fates decree; he will not give this up. That he can’t.
“Hey,” Hob murmurs, shifting until he can look over Dream’s shoulder. “You are thinking very loudly.”
Dream can’t help but huff at that, amusement curling through his chest. “And what is it that you are hearing of my thoughts, dear lover of mine?”
A rainy morning in bed finds Dream reflecting on his and Hob's relationship, and all that he would be willing to risk for the sake of keeping Hob's stubborn human heart beating.
Spoiler: just about anything.
Summary
It’s the right day, but the year is all wrong, and Dream suspects that there’s something else not quite right even before he finds himself standing in front of the shuttered remains of the White Horse Tavern. Still, he’s chilled in a way he’s not accustomed to feeling, reminiscent of the hopeless, free-falling frost that climbed up his spine and inside his gut the day he was meant to meet Hob when he was imprisoned. And that’s what it is, he realizes, this cold feeling. Hopelessness.
Should Dream seek him out, would Hob welcome him as a friend, or turn his shoulder as he would on an intruder? It’s what he would deserve, Dream muses as he’s preparing to turn heel from the tavern’s closed gates, even though as he’s resigning himself to shame he’s also gearing up to make this his next mission, his next purpose: to find Hob Gadling.
Alternatively: Dream and Hob find each other in 2021, and see no reason why they have to wait centuries to see each other again. And again.
