Piandao’s eyes crinkle in what Zuko recognizes as a smile. “I’d like you to meet Ranger Aang Gyatso,” he says, and inclines his head in the direction of the man standing next to him. “Your co-pilot.”

With the Jaeger Program nearing the end of its life, the Pan Pacific Defense Corps brings in Zuko Nakayama, ex-Jaeger pilot, as a last-ditch effort. His role is simple: to act as co-pilot for the newly restored Avatar Fury, and hopefully bring an end to the Kaiju War, once and for all.

He needed to reach out and touch Shouto. He needed to run his fingers through his hair, over his scars, old and new, and be reassured that Shouto is alive. It wasn’t enough anymore to watch Shouto breathe. He needed to feel him breathe — with a head on his chest or with his lips mouthing at his pulse point, tongue burning with the taste of life pumping through Shouto’s veins.
Needing to feel Shouto beneath him, living and breathing wasn’t the same as feeling, right? This is reassurance. This is confirmation. There is no emotion except relief. Love wasn’t in the equation because Katsuki wasn’t ready to solve that yet.
Having already been near death twice in a row, Katsuki and Shouto share a moment that shifts the course of their lives forever.
