Eddie thinks, fuck it, he’ll give up one tip to talk. “How long have you been together?” His voice is strangely rough, even though he’s seen plenty of goodbyes since he’s been driving.
Marvin looks startled for a minute. “Six years,” he says. “Three long-distance.”
“That must be hard.”
Marvin nods. There’s a kind of miserable longing on his face. “We facetime as often as we can, but—”
“It’s not the same,” Eddie finishes. He feels unaccountably sad.
Marvin nods again. “It’s not even the sex, you know? I mean, obviously I miss that too, but it’s just—waking up in the same bed with someone, or going for a walk at night—”
“People do look at you strangely if you walk in the street while facetiming,” Eddie agrees. Not that he and Buck ever woke up in bed together or went for a late-night walk, unless you counted both waking up in their bunks at the firehouse when the bell went off, or staggering from the firehouse to their cars, and why should he be thinking of Buck at all?
