The implication behind Liebgott's words was harsh, but David could see the sentiment reflected in the eyes of just about every man seated in the truck with him. Most of whom he didn't even recognize, he realized with a sinking feeling. They really had lost that many men in his absence.
But he forced himself to brush off the kneejerk reaction to defend himself. There was no way to explain that he'd arrived at that hospital with more than just the gunshot wound.
