There are various ways to check if someone is immortal.
You can observe them for years to see if the progression of time carves its way into their features. Maybe cut them yourself and see if they bleed and heal in the ways as a mortal ought to. Or perhaps just ask if they're the none-secretive type.
But Xiao knows of a much more efficient way.
For the yaksha need only to look into their eyes to know the true extent of their life, a most useful if not sometimes unsettling skill.

Finally found this fanfic again! Beautiful, heartwarming and heart wrenching at the same time, Author knows Xiao’s character and brings him to life in such a tender and breathtaking way. Reader’s character is extremely layered and complex, their lore so engaging and perfectly fitting with canon too. I loved every word, and I’m glad I can come back time and time again to savor this.
